Interviews

David Tucker - When interviewed, he was working in a CD-i emulator. Now he's a famous author (Reality Boy). We're trying contact to interview him again.

1 - What a CD-i?
CDi - Compact Disc Interactive, the CDi was a project started by Phillipsto develop a new standard for interactive Videos. The standard grew into adescription of a whole computer system complete with a multi tasking os.Phillips and many other company started marketing the CDi as ahome/business entertainment system (Focusing on 'MutiMedia'and Interactivetitles) But the system has since bombed (Primarily due to the cheesytitles) Phillips saw a new direction for there product and they startedmarketing the CDi as a Kioshk machine (those interactive terminals you seein the mall to look up musicians and other weird info) and Phillipscontinues to actively market the CDi for this application. Just forreference the CDi came out in the early 90's and tipicaly sold for $400 forthe basic model...

2 - What the proposal to make a CD-i emulator?
I originally set out to learn how to program the CDi. But in my research Idecided that an emulator of a cdi would be more productive. (Plus there isa strong push to find a way to play Video CD's on a PC, another featurethat the CDi has built in) I'm currently hoping to turn my Emulator into aCDi development platform, since the CDi is still being used quite activelyeven if only in a nitch market.

3 - You had problems with Sony or Phillips? In Brazil emulation isgrowing up, what do you think about emulation scene in world?
Neither Phillips nore anyone else has contacted me regarding my emu project(fortionently =) I do fear the power of Nintendo and Sony thou, I think ifNintendo ever sees emu's as a real threat to them (in termes of money) thatthey will bring the emu scene to a screeching halt, even the honest emuwriters will be to scared of facing legal action from Nintendo. But on a bright side Console copiers have ben around for over ten years and Nintendohas don very little to stop them, and they pose a Mutch bigger threat toNintendo.I have been following the emu scene for almost 3 years now and I think ithas changed dramatically. I have seen the emu authors mature a lot(especially looking at emus like Mame, Project Unreality, and System 16) But I fear that the emu scene Is getting to public, I think wear going to see a Big law suite by Nintendo soon (within the year) hopefully they will be targeting Rom CD distributors and not emu authors, even if emus are legitimate (witch they are) a law suite from Nintendo would cost to mutch.

5 - Besides CD-i emulator, you didn't make other emulator?
I've been looking into making a Virtual Boy emu, but i've ben concentrating on sharing info to others interested in making a vb emu instead of taking on the project myself...

6 - What the price of of CD-i compact discs?
Games run from $10-$50 But they are still quite hard to find (look in yourused video game store, or contact Phillips Directly)

7 - Your emulator runs roms or CDs?
My emu will use CD's Maby Ill come up with a scheme in witch you can dumpthe contents of a CD to the hard drive and run it form there, but thatwould be very low on my priority list...

8 - If your emulator run a disc or rom it have sound?
Yes I expect that sound will be one of the first things I get going (sinceall sound is just streaming audio right from the CD...)
