Interviews

Michael T. Stadelhofer - GameOS project leader talk with MGandhi about the project and new informations (updated) from the status of the project.

1 - Why build this OS? Whats the idea?
The idea is to create a good OS. But not just any good OS, the best. We are taking ideas from projects that have previously flopped, and adding them to our own. Many famous developers are now on our team, assisting us with this. Several concepts that never made it were really good concepts, but circumstances beyond the development team's control kept them from blooming.

2 - What's the differences between Windows and GameOS?
There are several differences. Of course, one of them is made by Microsoft, and another is made by Vortex Productions, but that's not where it stops. One of the concepts behind GameOS is to push a system to it's absolute limits, to squeeze out every ounce of power that it has. When this is done, some very cool things can happen, like running a program that needs a 3dfx card on a machine that doesn't have one, running a game that needs a Pentium on a 486, etc. All of this out of software optimisation. Our file system also differs, allowing a more logical data organization method and also offering realtime compression so that more data can literally fit into the same amount of space on a disk. Also, we will be shipping GameOS, or VortexOS as we have re-named it to, with the PlainCode package. PlainCode is a programming language for everyone. Like BASIC, but even simpler, and with the power of such languages as C++ and ASM. We have done some testing with this language, and in just one day an average middle-school student was able to learn all he needed to program an impressive game. This should be a very exciting addition for everyone who has ever been interested in programming before. Not only will it appeal to newbies, but also to seasoned professionals. To make PlainCode so easy to use, we had to organize command libraries in a much more logical fashion than they are in now, meaning added power to those who need it. VortexOS (formerly gameos) will include many other features which hope to re-define the modern operating system, including an open-doc-like interface, integrated plaincode environment, and many more interface elements that I'm not at liberty to address specifically at the moment. We may be renaming GameOS to VortexOS, but it will still keep all those emulators. A plugin-based system will allow the OS to read foreign filetypes, and run ROMs and non-Vortex programs, simply with the download of a small system module. Windows does almost nothing that I have mentioned, that's the difference.

3 - There is a development kit available?
At the moment, no. But hopefully one will be out soon. We really aren't that far with our work yet where we would be making the actual dev-tools, but, again, soon.

4 - When will be released the first GameOS beta version?
At the moment we're not entirely sure of when we will have progressed that far, although after a certian point we *do* want to start distributing pre-release versions among the general public. I'm going to say Mid-2000, that's where all of our estimates have led us thus far.

5 - GameOS will support Windows apps?
Initially, no. However we're making it as easy as possible for someone to emulate Windows programs within our system.

6 - GameOS will be FREE?
Totally free to download. Maybe free-source as well. Have to wait and see.

7 - And it's still under development?
Yes, very much so! =)
