Kinox Interview #22 - Mindrape


I. About the Interview
This interview has been conducted by MGandhi through IRC. He talked with Mindrape, former leader of dC (Damaged Cybernetics), and accused of NESticle death. This interview is an attempt to clarify some things never discussed.

1. Introduce yourself
My name is Donald Moore (better known as MindRape). I currently work in the industry as a software developer; help maintain a variety of software packages for f500 companies (one such package i been working with for over 7 years).

2. When was your first contact with emulation?
V20 Emulator written in pascal for the 8086, 386 FPU emulator. Late 80s I would say.

3. What was dC?
dC was short for Damaged Cybernetics. Damaged Cybernetics was a group of ppl who enjoy exploring various area of grayness [leaded by Mindrape]. From console piracy, to music piracy, emulation, technical documentation, source code retrieval :P, tools, etc etc

4. What happened with dC?
Since the the Nesticle Incident [when dC has released NESticle source code in] '97, there have been new members come and go. For the most part, dC keeps to itself (many will probably say this is clever wordage for inactive, oh well). Some noise about bringing the site back, but the general consensus says we are over-commited as it is.

5. Emuxpress said that "Most people seem to hesitate putting the blame on Mindrape for the NESticle scandal. However this is not the way I feel. Mindrape justifies his crime because Sardu did not have the necessary means or knowledge to protect himself. Does this make sense? No way." What do you think about it?
Ppl are entitled to their opinions. Its not my fault you put confidental information on a machine connected to the Internet. Sardu knew this. As for a crime, wot crime was commited? Is this more pirates with morals crap?

6. So, dC death was caused by NESticle incident?
Yes and No. Things at dc were already failing apart by the time the Nesicle Incident occured, more so of me than the other members. My personal life took an exterme shit: start of a 2.5 year nasty divorce, child custody issues, etc, etc. The issue with Kronk was just another straw on the pile.

7. Why did you release the NESticle source code?
I wasn't sure wot to do with it, i asked various ppl in #emu wot i should do with it, ppl begged me to release it. So I did, and a quite a number of them all of sudden became pirates with morals, GAG. Just to clarify, y0shi recommended not releasing it and warned me of the consequences if i did.

8. What websites have received it?
I don't recall sending it to any sites.

9. What was your reaction when the boom of NESticle scandal happened?
That i really pissed off a lot of fucking ppl. Which is great, i love jerk'n ppl's chains. Royce (another member of dC) has been to known to have perfected the art of chain yanking, probably thanks to his Mormon upbringing. One important thing i learned from this tho, there are loads and loads of hypocritical pirates or pirates with morals.

10. How have you entered Kronk's [Kronk was one of the NESticle authors] computer?
Thru an open file share over TCP/IP

11. Bloodlust did the correct thing discontinuing NESticle?
Dunno, but it did get the reaction Sardu wanted, get a lot of ppl pissed at me. Thank you all for the hate mail, death threats (kinda miss those), and phone calls.

12. And about when Bloodlust has released a new NESticle?
I thought it was great. Showed they weren't a bunch of babies. They were punishing the wrong group of ppl (the users), they should of been punishing themselves.

13. In your #emu Efnet profile, you say you're the guy that everyone hates for making sardu/nesticle not just famous but legendary, is it your real feeling?
No i'm sure Sardu would of done just fine without me. Its just the way ppl escalate the situation about me, sardu and nesticle (sounds like a warped porno), that without me!@#$#@$ he wouldn't of never made it. in otherwords i'm mocking the scene.

14. What's the reason for this "disaffection" with Sardu?
I don't dislike him, i never met the man. Altho i'm not sure i can say about sardu's feelings about me, but by now i'm sure he probably doesn't care.

15. What was your relation with Chris Hickman?
Chris Hickman, TyphoonZ, maintained Archic Ruins, the emulation section of dC website.

16. Why he left dC?
Chris was outgrowing dC, needed new challanges. He also left because of things at dC were falling apart, mostly because of my personal life falling apart. He also disagreed with the release of the Nesticle source code.

17. Emu Scene is better or it has falling within the years?
Every scene has its ups and downs.

18. Are you still involved with emulation? Check emulation sites?
I still mess with emulation, and check emulation sites. Do I get involved, NO.

19. Do you still "stands" on gray area?
Always, gray area is anything that ppl are afraid to explore. It doesn't have to be technical. One such gray area i'm in is body modification. I currently have these area pierced: my nape (back of the neck), penis (prince albert), 4ga lower ear lobe, 6ga next to it, 16ga upper cartilidge, 10ga tongue ring, 14ga nipple rings. I also have a few tattoos, not really gray area but interesting to know: I have a smashed eyeball on my right arm, PI on my left arm, and 'mindrape' across my back (looks like a typewriter hunted me down and stapled me across the back with each letter :>)

20. What's your current relation with Y0shi?
We are civil toward each other, we don't really talk much anymore. But I will say this, he made old console scene days enjoyable. I learned quite a bit from him, technical as well as things about myself. Thanks y0shi.

21. Since ZD's [Zophar's Domain] start, you were the only reason that "forced" Brad to write bad words on his site. How do you accepts it?
shit motherfuck'n day0m!@#$ Nice to feel special doesn't it :> My general rule of thumb is this, everyone has the right to say whatever they want about me, regardless of how i feel about it. BE HONEST HOW YOU FEEL ABOUT ME.

22. Appears that only ROM hackers considers you as a hero. Why it happens in your opinion?
Well without asking them individually, I wouldn't know. But my gut instinct says probably because i'm not a hypocritical pirate, which is quite common in ALL SCENES. Hypocritical pirate say its ok to take this, but not this. WOT@!#$!@ since when did a bunch of faggits like you get morals...geesh, get off your momma's internet connection.

23. What's your current projects?
Biggest project is wot i do for a living. Accepting a load of new responsibilities, doesn't leave much room for more personal projects. mainly concentrating on studying programmer, design patterns, project management, fucking around on family radio network freqz :>, video piracy (woohoo! fuck you mpaa!). The hardest project i have to endure, i gn0 i can do it, no spying on marat...chuckle

24. Have your uncontrollable obsession for criminal computer activity finished??
That's my ex-wife and her lawyer's legal approach against me to win custody of our kids. Altho many other ppl seem to believe it to be true as well.

25. Have you suffered legal sues from FBI?
In general yes, from my first bust. Second bust dealt more with the Secret Service.
